Association Hierarchy Limit

Explains the 10,000-association limit on hierarchy requests, the warning shown when it is reached, and what is returned.

Context

  • When working with an entity that has a very large hierarchy, not every association may be shown.

  • Typical places this appears: the Related Parties task in a journey, Hierarchy Capture, the entity profile's related parties view, and the Association Query API.

  • A warning may be shown: "Maximum hierarchy size exceeded, only 10000 associations have been returned".

  • Pages showing very large hierarchies may also take noticeably longer to load.

Key Points

  • Each request for an entity's association hierarchy returns at most 10,000 associations. This is a fixed platform limit and cannot be configured per tenant.

  • This is not a storage limit. An entity can hold more than 10,000 associations, and none are deleted. The limit only applies to how many are returned in a single request.

  • The full hierarchy counts towards the limit, not just direct relationships. Every association reached from the root entity, at every level, is included.

Behaviour When the Limit Is Reached

  • In the user interface: a warning notification tells you that the hierarchy has been capped and only part of it is shown.

  • In the API: the response is still successful (200 OK). The messages array contains an entry with type Warning and the text Maximum hierarchy size exceeded, only 10000 associations have been returned.

  • Associations beyond the limit are not returned. The response is not paginated and makes no guarantee about which associations are left out.

  • The limit applies to these Association Query endpoints:

    • GET /associationquery/api/association/root/{entityId}: all verified associations for a root entity

    • GET /associationquery/api/association/outbound/root/{entityId}: all verified outbound associations for a root entity

    • GET /associationquery/api/association/root/{entityId}/journey/{journeyId}: all associations for a root entity within a journey

Resolution

If you see the warning on an entity you don't expect to be this large, contact Fenergo Support. Include:

  • the Entity ID

  • the Journey ID (if applicable)

  • the approximate time the warning appeared

Verification

  • Reload the affected task or entity page. If no warning appears, the full hierarchy has been returned.

  • For API calls, confirm the messages array has no Maximum hierarchy size exceeded warning.
